Description
The print is taken from Eberhard Kieser’s “Toden Tantz” (1648) which means “Dance of Death” in German. It depicts a dance of the living and the dead to the music of a skeletal band. A scene like this is called a “Danse Macabre,” also meaning “Dance of Death,” which serves as an allegory on the universality of death: no matter one’s station in life, the Danse Macabre unites all.
The image serves as a “Memento Mori,” meaning “Remember Death” in Latin. Memento mori is the medieval theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.
